What Kinds of Casino Management Degree Programs Are Available?

You'll find that some colleges and universities offer Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality and Casino Management programs. Other schools include casino management as a concentration within undergraduate degree programs in hospitality management.

Program Fields Hospitality and casino management, hospitality management with a concentration in casino management
Admissions Requirements High school diploma or GED, SAT or ACT scores
Common Courses Casino security, player development, gaming regulations and laws, human resources, casino accounting
Online Availability Fully or partially online programs are available; in-person internship or cooperative work experience required

Are There Any Prerequisites?

Most bachelor's degree programs require that you have a high school diploma or GED, in addition to submitting your SAT or ACT scores. If you're home schooled, some colleges offer modified requirements, but you'll still have to submit scores from a standardized test.

What Courses Will I Take?

Along with some general education requirements, your casino management curriculum will include classes designed to give you a solid foundation in all aspects of managing a casino or resort. Topics of study may include gaming regulations and laws, casino security, player development, gaming revenue management, human resources, casino marketing, casino accounting and principles of hospitality.

In addition, you'll be expected to complete an internship or capstone project. A few schools offer cooperative programs, through which you can balance your coursework with six months of employment in a casino environment to give you hands-on experience and help you gain knowledge of the different games. Note that because casino employment usually involves working with and around large sums of money, you'll likely be subject to a criminal background check and drug test when preparing for your internship or cooperative employment. If you have a criminal background, you might encounter difficulties in meeting this program requirement.

Can I Study Online?

There are a few online programs in casino management. Some are completely online, while others blend online and weekend courses. If you chose to study online, you'll still be responsible for completing an internship or cooperative education requirement. You'll also be expected to have an up-to-date computer with a high-speed Internet connection, and, depending on the program, you might need speakers and a microphone.
