Online Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Communication

Organizational communication examines how communication takes place within workplaces and other organizational settings. An online degree in this field will equip you with skills in leadership and group communication and can lead to a career in communications, human resources, or media relations.

What Will I Learn in an Online Organizational Communication Bachelor's Degree Program?

Colleges and universities allow you to earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication, as well as a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in organizational communication. Your program explores communication principles, as well as how to apply those concepts to conflict resolution, leadership and group interaction within businesses. Your courses investigate how to use communication to manage employees and carry out an organization's vision.

Some distance learning degree programs are available, which allow you to take some or all of your courses online. In online courses, you turn in assignments and converse with professors through online learning systems. Additionally, some online programs require students to possess work experience or complete prior coursework.

What Kind of Courses Might I Take?

Courses examine business, communication, human resources and management. You'll understand the theoretical concepts of communication, as well as how to rely on communication to promote a business. Throughout the program, you may learn theories in public relations, interpersonal communication, mass media and organizational analysis. Some degree programs also allow you to take part in a senior project as a way to test your organizational communication skills outside of the classroom.

What Careers Are Available After College?

After college, you may be able to find work within a communications department of a business. Some career options can include sales, media relations or human resources. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that employment of advertising, marketing, promotions and sales managers would grow about as fast as average (www.bls.gov). Employment in these careers may grow by 10% from 2016-2026. The median annual wage for advertising and promotions managers was $117,130 in May 2018, while public relations and fundraising managers earned a median salary of $114,800, stated the BLS.
