What Kinds of Bachelor Degree Programs for Paramedics Are Available?

Are There Any Prerequisites?

All programs will require you be certified as an EMT-Basic with at least a year of experience working in the field. Some may expect you to have - or currently be completing - an associate's degree in the field. A drug test and criminal background check are usually required, and you'll typically be asked to have current CPR certification. Some programs may also require you to take and pass the HOBET V (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test) exam with a composite score in the 80 - 90th percentile range.

What Courses Will I Take?

You will start with a general education core and take courses that will prepare you for the clinical and administrative challenges of providing emergency and pre-hospital care. Topics you'll study may include:

  • Health care administration
  • Pharmacology
  • Advanced trauma care
  • Medical terminology
  • Disaster management
  • EMS law

In some instances, if you already have an associate's degree and extensive work experience in the field, you may be allowed to bypass some course or fieldwork requirements.

Can I Study Online?

Some schools do offer paramedic bachelor's degrees online. You will log into the school's website and take the same courses as your classmates in a traditional program would. You'll need to have an up-to-date computer as well as a high speed internet connection. Assignments will be handed in through the website and you'll communicate with your instructors via e-mail; textbooks may be ordered online.

Even though many learning components of this program are available online, extensive fieldwork experience is required. In-person training sessions are usually arranged through your school and can be completed at nearby hospitals, healthcare facilities, or private EMS agencies.
