How to Choose a Journalism School

Find out if alumni or faculty members have received recognition for their work. You might be influenced by opportunities to specialize in sports or arts journalism. Look into schools that allow undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to university-based media outlets. If your goal is a career in broadcasting or new media, look for access to professional-grade equipment and technical facilities.

What Are Three of the Best Journalism Schools?

Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins

Students working for CSU media outlets, including the Rocky Mountain Collegian, Campus Television, KCSU-FM and College Avenue magazine have won over 500 national and regional awards since 1990. In 2011, CSU's Department of Journalism and Technical Communication claimed to receive more requests for interns from local and national media organizations than it could fill. CSU was 127th in U.S. News & World Report's ranking of national universities in 2015.

As a journalism undergraduate, you can choose among concentrations in news-editorial, TV news and video communication, public relations or specialized and technical communication. You'll have access to six video editing suites and a television studio, as well as computer laboratories.

Master's degree candidates can select from four possible concentrations, including print and broadcast journalism or new communication technologies. The Center for Research on Communication and Technology has received funding from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and federal agencies like the National Science Foundation. Faculty members have received more than $10 million in funding from these and other entities. In the Ph.D. program, you could focus on new information technology and public awareness of contemporary media issues. These degrees are possible:

  • B.A. in Journalism and Media Communication
  • M.S. in Public Communication and Technology
  • Ph.D. in Public Communication and Technology

Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames

Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication alumni have won five Pulitzer Prizes. The Iowa State Daily won first place among student newspapers in its region in a 2011 Society of Professional Journalists competition. The university tied for 108th in U.S. News & World Report's ranking of national universities for 2015.

Like Greenlee journalism majors who have interned with ABC5 or the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, you might pursue one or more internships during the program. You could participate in a Greenlee-sponsored ESPNU sports project. Students run Trend, a campus lifestyle magazine, the campus news program ISUpdate, the general interest quarterly Ethos, the Iowa State Daily and Uhuru, a multicultural magazine.

The master's program offers Communication Theory and Research or Professional and Strategic Communication concentrations. Research could be supported by facilities like the Greenlee Reading Room and the Parks Library. Students in the master's program may complete a thesis or a creative component, which could include a website, video, CD/DVD, audiotape, instructional guide or campaign plan. The school provides professional media equipment, computers and the latest software for loan to students working on audiovisual projects. The following degrees are available:

  • M.S. in Journalism and Mass Communication
