What Will I Learn through Biological Medicine Degree Programs?

At the master's degree level, you may participate in biomedical research and study advanced mathematics that can aid in the study of biological sciences. In other classes, you may study concepts in cell chemistry and biology as you learn how the body fights disease. Some classes examine genetic and infectious diseases, the treatments available to combat them and advancements being made in the field. You can earn a Master of Science in Biotechnology and Biological Medicine, but a Master of Science in Biomedicine or Biomedical Science is much more common. You may need to write a thesis based on an aspect of biomedicine.

You can also earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Sciences. Some courses may teach you standards for arranging clinical trials and interpreting the results. You may be required to select a research focus area that could later frame your dissertation and prepare you to provide biomedical research to the medical field. Every program requires the completion of biomedical labs.

Degree ProgramsMaster of Science in Biotechnology or Biomedicine, Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences
Common Admission RequirementsUndergraduate courses in biology, chemistry, physics, genetics, biochemistry
Career OptionsResearch, medical scientist

What Are the Admissions Requirements?

To be admitted into the master's degree program, you must have earned undergraduate credits in the sciences, which could include biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics and cell biology. If you have a bachelor's degree in a field related to the biomedical sciences, such as biology, you may not have to take as many master's degree level courses. Admittance into a doctoral degree program requires at least a bachelor's degree with credits in courses that include biology, physics and organic chemistry. Professional experience could be advantageous, but isn't required.

What Career Opportunities Are Available?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), with a master's degree in biological medicine, biomedicine or biomedical science, you could conduct research in the biological sciences (www.bls.gov). You can also go into product development or pharmaceutical medical research. With a Ph.D., you could become a medical scientist. According to the BLS, this involves researching medical problems to advance research so early diagnosis, prevention and treatments are possible. You could also conduct independent research. A position in drug development and arranging clinical trials for new drugs is another possibility.
