What You Need to Know

You could obtain your basic certified nursing assistant (CNA) skills in a training program that requires about 75 hours of classroom and lab time and another 75 hours of clinical training. Completing this program prepares you for state licensure. You could also complete an advanced training program to work with acute care patients. These programs require between 64 and 88 hours of training.

Lane Community College

Lane's Continuing Education division offers CNA 1 and CNA 2 programs. CNA 1 is taught every term. You'll complete 79 hours of coursework including anatomy, medical terminology, patient needs and infection control. In your fourth or fifth week, you'll begin 79 hours of clinical training at an area nursing home. In the CNA 2 program, you'll spend 52 hours taking classes and 25 hours in clinical work.

You can take your classes on campus or online. You must pass your final exam with an 85% or better. The CNA 2 - Acute Care program requires 40 hours of classroom work and skills training, either on campus or online, and 24 hours of clinical experience at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital. Clinical practice is treated like a job, with requirements for reporting absences and a dress code.

In the CNA 1 program, you'll learn basic patient care skills during 75 hours of classroom and lab training and 75 hours of clinical training, and then you'll have the opportunity to increase your skills and potential for job advancement through the CNA 2 - Acute Care program. If you qualify, you can complete a 3-day clinical rotation at a local hospital. PCC offers CNA classes in the day and evenings at the Central campus, Willow Creek Center and online through Open Campus.
