American Red Cross, Southeastern Pennsylvania

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania offers nurse assistant training courses at its facilities in Philadelphia and Lansdale. The program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Classes are small, with one instructor for every ten students. While enrolled, you typically attend classes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and learn to perform nursing skills such as taking vital signs, assisting patients with bathing and helping them move safely. After completion of the program, you can sit for the CNA certification exam.

Community College of Philadelphia

The nurse aide program is a joint endeavor between the Community College of Philadelphia and the Wanamaker Institute to teach job skills to unemployed and underemployed individuals. If you qualify for admission, you become a Wanamaker Scholar and learn basic nursing aide techniques in a classroom and in a laboratory, then gain clinical practice in a health care facility. Topics covered in this course include ethical issues, patient rights, infection control, accident prevention and personal care skills. At the end of the course, you'll be eligible to take the CNA exam.

The leaders of District 1199C, an affiliate of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, provide career education to more than 2,000 students a year at its Training and Upgrading Fund's Learning Center in Center City, Philadelphia. The nurse aide program is open to adults in the community, who pay tuition, as well as members of the training fund, who get their tuition reimbursed after completing the course. While participating in the program, you'll learn about the role of a nurse aide, take classroom courses and gain practical experience in a health care facility. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to take the state CNA exam, and the cost in included in your tuition.
