You can take individual classes, or you can complete a certificate program in baking and pastry arts or an associate's degree program in culinary arts. Standalone classes may last only a few hours, while certificate program may require three semesters of coursework or less. The associate's degree program takes about two years and includes culinary skills courses alongside baking and cake decorating coursework.

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College offers three classes in pastry decorating. These courses are offered through the Midwest Culinary Institute and are hands-on 3-hour classes. In Pastry Decorating 101, you'll practice basic piping and icing techniques on cupcakes and cookies. The follow-up course teaches you to decorate cakes with buttercream and fondant, while Pastry Decorating 301 builds on those skills and allows you to take home your self-decorated cake.

Hocking College

The miniatures and petite fours course covers preparation along with icing and decorating.
