Rigorous Academics

High Marks

Earlham College's website boasts that it's 'among the nation's academically strongest liberal arts colleges.' What would make them say that? It could be because U.S. News & World Report ranked them as the 75th best liberal arts college nationally, the ninth best college when it comes to undergraduate teaching or the 36th best school according to high school counselors. It could also be because Earlham's 29th in the nation when it comes to alumni who go on to seek Ph.D.s in their field, putting them in the 98th percentile of the country.

A Wealth of Options

Earlham College offers 40 different undergraduate and graduate programs of study, divided into four fields: social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts and humanities. In all of these disciplines, Earlham emphasizes what they call the 'teaching-learning process.' They intend for their students to develop a love of education, which will inspire them to become lifelong learners. Additionally, Earlham encourages collaborations between students and faculty; they recognize that their teachers, too, are forever learning.

Expanded Opportunities

Earlham's domestic and international study abroad programs are incredibly popular; the school reports that a full 70% of their student body participates. Students have a number of diverse options open to them, from spending a semester soaking up the culture of New York City or Philadelphia to taking a year to live with a family in Japan or attend a university in Senegal. These programs help give students a global perspective, something which Earlham values greatly.

Religious Tradition

Impressively, Earlham College hosts the only accredited Quaker theological seminary in the world, the Earlham School of Religion. The college was initially founded by the Quakers, and thought it has significantly diversified its student population in the past half-century, Quaker roots still run deep. According to the school, their key philosophy comes from the Quaker notion that education is 'the pursuit of truth.' To that end, Earlham College stresses the importance of rigorous inquiry with the goal of improving the world around them.
