Join the K Plan

Founded in 1833 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this small liberal arts college, often referred to as 'K', has long stressed the importance of a well-rounded education merging traditional classroom teachings, personal interest development and hands-on participation. To that end, Kalamazoo College developed its current education model, known as the 'K Plan', about 30 years ago.

The K Plan is an extensive, customized curriculum that will engage you beyond the borders of your classroom and even your country. You will have the chance to engage in non-traditional learning experiences in which you can 'find yourself,' possibly uncovering interests and passions that can be parlayed into exciting and rewarding careers.

The K Plan consists of:

  • Liberal arts and sciences coursework
  • Practical experiences
  • Multicultural study
  • Individualized senior projects

Study Abroad

Kalamazoo College established its study abroad programs in 1958. International study offers students the opportunity to integrate themselves into other cultures and gain a deeper understanding of global perspectives. All study abroad programs require that students complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP).

An ICRP is the result of both observation and participation. After serving in an internship or in a volunteer position, students write essays detailing the impact of their experiences not only on themselves but upon the culture in which they studied. The length of time spent in a study abroad program varies, but is generally between three and nine months.

An incredible 85% of Kalamazoo College students take advantage of study abroad programs. More than 40 programs are offered in 26 countries, including Australia, Germany, China, Japan and France.

Express Yourself

The culmination of your unique educational development at Kalamazoo College comes in the form of a Senior Individualized Project (SIP). A SIP may be completed in any major department, and not necessarily in your major area of study. A project can also be split between two departments.

Want to write and stage a play, conduct an orchestra or host an art exhibit? Almost anything is possible when you register for and present an acceptable idea for your Senior Individualized Project. Besides creative projects, you could choose to complete an internship, conduct research or submit a written report.

Since Kalamazoo College believes independence and inner reflection are important components of the learning process, a Senior Individualized Project is required of all students. It is a capstone that allows you to draw from all you have experienced throughout your academic career.
