A Small But Mighty Institution

Pitzer College is a small school with a big reputation among those who evaluate postsecondary institutions. One need only consider some of the college's recent accolades.

Pitzer is ranked first in Fulbright Fellowships among undergraduate colleges, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. It is also the youngest college ranked in the top 50 American liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report. And the school has been named among the 'Best Values in Private Colleges' by Kiplingers.

A College with a Conscience

While scoring well among higher ed analysts, Pitzer College isn't as widely known nationally as some of its brethren schools. This may in part be due to the fact that it is a younger college - founded only in 1963 - that focuses on providing high-quality instruction to a relatively small student population; the school enrolls only about 1,000 students.

While Pitzer's size may not turn heads, its academic programming is gaining wider attention. The school provides more than 40 interdisciplinary programs designed to produce thoughtful, independent-minded graduates. Students work with faculty members to create personalized education programs that allow them to explore academic interests while developing important critical thinking skills.

Coursework is designed not only to promote individual intellectual growth, but also to foster social responsibility. As part of their coursework, young people are expected to complete service projects in the community. Students annually perform more than 100,000 hours of volunteering, enough to garner Pitzer a 'Most Service Minded School' designation from Newsweek.

Green Global Citizens

But social responsibility is only one area in which the school shines. Students attending the school also learn an ethic of environmental sustainability. The campus is landscaped with native, low-water vegetation. Waste from the campus dining hall is composted and used as fertilizer on the school's grounds. And Pitzer residence halls have won awards for their Gold LEED-certified green design.

Another focus of the school: Prepare global citizens who are able to understand and appreciate other cultures. About 74 percent of students study abroad, the most effective way to develop cross-cultural understanding. Pitzer is also the most diverse school among the top 50 liberal arts colleges, giving students plenty of opportunity to mingle with people of different backgrounds and identities.

The world is in need of more people who are able to look outside of themselves to help sustain the health and environment of communities around the globe. Greater intercultural understanding is also necessary if we're to successfully address global problems that threaten everyone's welfare. Pitzer College is working to produce just the kind of individuals who can help to positively transform our world.
