Saving Money With Social Networking

Think that social networking is just a way to stay in touch with friends and avoid studying? Think again! Social networking can be a valuable tool for job-hunting, studying and even saving you money. But how can browsing social media sites keep more money in your pocket? The answers might come as a surprise.

Members-Only Discounts

Before the days of the Internet, the way to join a preferred members club for any given store usually involved writing down a whole bunch of personal information and getting a swipe or punch card. While many stores still do that, some are beginning to transition over to using social networking sites as a means of keeping track of members. By joining a group on Facebook or liking a certain status on a store's page, you might be offered special discounts. It might be on one specific item or, if you're lucky, it might be on a total purchase price. Many stores also offer exclusive coupon codes or printable coupons to people who follow them on Twitter or Facebook. Getting a membership card isn't necessarily a bad thing though, so doing that as well might be a nice supplement.

Newsletters

When you sign up to Twitter pages or Facebook groups, you can also sometimes give your email address to be on a newsletter list. By doing that, you can allow stores or companies to send you newsletters that let you know of upcoming sales or special discounts. It isn't just retail stores either. Restaurants sometimes offer free dishes or special deals for your anniversary or birthday when you sign up for a newsletter. Wineries can sometimes give you free tastings when you visit in person. It seems like every business nowadays has some sort of newsletter, and one of the easiest ways to find it and sign up is through social networking sites.

Scholarship Options

When you think about saving money, you probably only consider things like stores and companies. However, your education can benefit too. Scholarships have started popping up on Facebook and Twitter recently, offering money to students who write short essays or compete in contests. Some scholarships contests even just consist of posting on a group's Facebook page or responding to a Twitter post. Even if you don't find any scholarships to apply for directly on the social media site, there are groups that have lists of scholarship links. You can use Twitter's search function to look up scholarships as well. Either way, if you can manage to get your hands on one of these scholarships, you'll be saving yourself money on your college education.

Beware of Temptation

It has been said that you can spend a whole lot of money trying to save money. Sales are tempting things that can make us want to rush out to the nearest store and spend money right away. One important thing to remember is that even though you're spending less money on certain items, you're still spending money. Before you go out sale-hopping, ask yourself if you really need this product. That usually expensive sweater may be half-price today, but if you already have one of those sweaters or a bunch like it, do you really need to buy another? It can be very easy to shell out more cash than you would have ever intended to spend just because you feel like you're getting special discounts. Be ready to look over the deals you get through social networking sites and be able to say 'no thanks' to things you don't need.
