What Training Is Available in Cardiovascular Nursing?

Cardiovascular nursing typically is studied through a master's program in advanced nursing, such as an acute care nurse practitioner or pediatric nurse practitioner program that offers a subspecialty in cardiovascular nursing. These programs are open to registered nurses (RNs) who already have a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Topics of study in a master's program with a focus on cardiovascular nursing might include advanced pharmacology, clinical prevention, rehabilitation and specialty assessment. You also might take courses in leadership, nursing management, research and advanced nursing theory. Your program likely will include an internship.

How Can I Become Certified?

To qualify for cardiovascular nursing certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, you must be an active RN with at least two years of full-time experience (www.nursecredentialing.org). Other requirements include at least 2,000 hours of cardiovascular nursing experience and 30 hours of cardiovascular nursing education in the past three years, as well as passage of an exam.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses also offers subspecialty designations for cardiovascular nurses, including Adult Cardiac Medicine Certification and Adult Cardiac Surgery Certification (www.aacn.org). Eligibility requirements include current RN licensure and current clinical nursing specialty certification that's been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American Board of Nursing Specialties. Also, in the two years prior to your application, you must have completed a minimum of 1,750 hours of beside care, half of which must have been spent caring for acutely or critically ill cardiac patients or for cardiac surgery patients in their first 48 hours post-surgery. Additionally, you must pass a 90-question exam.

What Could Certification Do For Me?

Certification as a cardiovascular nurse shows current and future employers that you have demonstrated knowledge and skills in the field. This could open the door to promotions, opportunities with bigger and better employers, and higher pay.
