Celebrate! It's Computer Science Education Week!

Congress has designated the week of December 5-11, 2010, Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) in order to highlight the importance of computer science education in our tech-driven world. Read on to learn how you can get involved in the celebration. Schools offering Teaching - Math & Science degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Computer Science Education

Computing in the Digital Age

From the classroom to the workplace to your home entertainment center, computers are ubiquitous. As a result, computing skills have become essential to both academic and professional success, and computer science education is as important as reading and math.

In declaring this week 'Computer Science Education Week,' Congress reminds us of three key roles of CS education:

  • It teaches students critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • It teaches students to understand the 'computational thinking' that is required for success in the 21st century.
  • It prepares students to tackle 'the world's most challenging problems' from a computational perspective.

And yet, in spite of the importance of computing skills, CS education has failed to become a part of the standard curricula at many public schools. As a result, many students lack the opportunity to engage with computers in a rigorous academic fashion, and many teachers fail to receive proper professional development in educational technology.

Spreading the Word About CS

CSEdWeek is setting out to change that by promoting events that highlight 'the critical role of computing in today's society and the imperative to bolster computer science education at all levels.'

There are events happening at schools and community centers all over the country. Bradley University is capturing kids' attention by hosting a video gaming competition open to local high school students that includes information on how computer science can help you develop video games.

Meanwhile, the University of Nebraska is offering a week-long series of presentations on topics in computing education, and Droid Engine and GTUG Zacatecas are hosting conferences on the importance of computer science.

You can even celebrate without leaving your living room - several organizations are launching social media blitzes to raise awareness about CS education, and everyone is invited to join in.

In addition to promoting these events, CSEdWeek is offering engaging resources for students, educators, parents and the community to learn more about computer science and computer education. Students are invited to create their own YouTube commercials promoting computer science, teachers can download lesson plan ideas for integrating CS into any classroom and parents can even pick up a few card tricks that show students the magic of computation.

Visit the CSEdWeek website to learn more about events in your area and what you can do to promote computer education.
