Do I Need Certification to Work as a Home Care Aide?

Home care aides are employed by agencies, both private and public, and are required to have little education. Licensure is not required, and certification is voluntary. While certification is not required to work as a home care aide, it is available and it does not involve a lengthy process. Earning your certification will show that you meet industry standards, have received training and are dedicated to your career. Some schools and organizations offer training programs to help prepare you for national certification.

What Does Certification Involve?

Certification for home care aides is offered by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC). The NAHC certification requires completing 75 hours of training and passing a written test. In order to earn your certification, your skills also need to be assessed by a registered nurse, and you must prove your ability to perform tasks at a satisfactory, national industry level.

What Will My Job Entail?

While you are working as a home care aide, you will be acting as a companion and helper to your patient. Your duties will vary daily and from patient to patient. You may be responsible for the care of only one specific individual or you may rotate to multiple patients throughout the week. Work is available with the elderly or individuals that have disabilities or need assistance with daily activities. Basic household tasks like laundry may become your responsibility, or you may be in charge of taking the patient to activities to help them maintain interaction with society.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that your duties may include light house cleaning, basic healthcare, linen changing, bedpan maintenance, shopping trips and personal care. The BLS also reports that home care aides should be strong in case there is a need to move the patient around or help with exercise. Family members of the patient may also assign you duties for their loved one if applicable.

Are Job Prospects Strong For Home Care Aides?

Positions for home health aides are projected to see a massive increase of 38% during the period of 2014-2024, according to the BLS (www.bls.gov) The need for home care aides is growing quickly and looks to remain strong in the future. The job does have a high turnover rate, as a result of low pay and long hours, but this creates plentiful openings. There may also be a rise in individuals who choose home care over group homes, nursing homes or assisted living, which will encourage job growth. The BLS states that because of the growth of the elderly population in the United States, more home care aides will be needed to keep up and provide care outside of hospitals and clinics.
