What Is a Purchasing Manager?

As a purchasing manager, you are in charge of making sure that your company has enough equipment and supplies to complete daily tasks. If your company manufactures products, you will be in charge of purchasing the materials that makes them. You are also responsible for ensuring that you have enough inventory to meet production costs, but that you haven't purchased more than you need. Additional duties include analyzing vendor proposals and bids, negotiating contracts and enforcing the contract if problems arise.

What Training Programs Exist?

Before earning certification, you may want to complete an associate's or bachelor's degree in purchasing and supply management. It's important to note that the level of education you have completed will help you get to the 100 points required by the American Purchasing Society (APS). For example, an associate's degree is worth 30 points, while a bachelor's degree is worth 40. Earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) is worth an additional 10 points.

If you have earned a degree in a business related area, you can also pursue a certificate that focuses on specific areas related to purchasing. These courses will teach you about purchasing fundamentals, purchasing concepts, cost-price negotiation and public sector procurement.

Some schools provide these programs online. Universities providing bachelor's and master's degree programs for purchasing managers include:

  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Portland State University
  • Franklin University
  • Rowan University
  • Purdue University
  • University of Tennessee Knoxville

What Will I Study?

In undergraduate or graduate degree programs, you will receive instruction in contract negotiations and purchasing in the public sector. You will also study various business practices and management responsibilities. Courses you can expect to find in purchasing and supply management or business administration include:

  • Logistics management
  • Purchasing principles
  • Inventory management
  • Strategic planning
  • Supply chain management

What Types of Certifications Are Available?

The American Purchasing Society (APS) offers four certification options for purchasing managers; these include the Certified Purchasing Professional (CPP), the Certified Professional Purchasing Manager (CPPM), the Certified Green Purchasing Professional (CGPP) and the Certified Professional Purchasing Consultant (CPPC). When applying for the CPP certification, candidates are required to complete a four course training program. In addition to passing the exam, you must earn a total of 100 points based on a combination of education, experience and references. Passing the CPP exam is a prerequisite for the other certifications.

A fifth certification, the Certified Professional in Distribution and Warehousing (CPDW), is available to anyone. Purchasing managers could choose to pursue this credential as well.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) offers the Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) credential. You must pass a total of three exams to achieve this certification.
