College Students Help Provide Free Online Tutoring Through Learn To Be Foundation

Elementary and middle school students in need of educational help can log onto the Learn To Be Foundation's website. Once there, these students can take part in online sessions with certified tutors, some of which are college students. And the best part is the service is totally free. Schools offering Instructional Design degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

The Foundation

Learn To Be, a non-profit organization, was created with the idea in mind that the Internet can be used 'as a medium for people of all ages to grasp their educational potential.' Donations the foundation receives make it possible for the tutoring services to remain free for all students. Tutoring services are offered for students in kindergarten through eighth grade and are available in math, science, social studies and language arts.

How It Works

Any kindergarten to eighth grade student with a computer and Internet access can use Learn To Be. Students first have to create their own accounts and then can simply log in when they want to request a tutoring session. Sessions are offered in half hour blocks between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, seven days a week.

Students receive one-on-one instruction and communication through audio and by using a virtual whiteboard. Students also can upload class documents to help with the tutoring sessions. All sessions are recorded and saved so students can access them later if they want to go over the information again.

The Tutors

Learn To Be has more than 100 certified tutors, most of which are college students or young adults. Potential tutors must first complete an 'extensive application process,' which includes background checks. They must also take part in a mock tutoring session. The foundation says that one of the top qualities it looks at when selecting tutors is their ability to interact well with children.

Some higher education institutions, like Syracuse University, have their own chapters of Learn To Be to get college students involved in the tutoring. Tutors are asked to commit to between three and five hours a week, which means students can give back even if they don't have a great deal of free time to devote each week. Getting involved with Learn To Be might be particularly beneficial for students interested in going into childhood education, since this could give them some experience working with younger students.
