What Does a Clinical Assistant Do?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), your duties as a clinical medical assistant may be determined by state law. Clinical responsibilities might include the preparation of medications, drawing blood, the collection of specimens and even the performance of clinical or lab tests. You might also inform patients about medications, treatments or special diets. Other duties might include arranging and maintaining examining room equipment and supplies. Administrative or clerical duties may also fall to you.

How Can I Locate a School?

There are two main accrediting bodies you can use to help you locate reputable schools and programs. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) maintains an online directory of nearly 2000 accredited online and on-campus programs in 23 health science professions. You may prefer to use the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The ABHES online directory lists schools and programs by school, program, credential and delivery method.

What Can I Expect in a Program?

Clinical assistants can attend a 60-96 credit program. Completion can lead to an Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.). An A.A.S. program is usually considered more technical, while an A.S. program is considered more academically oriented.

Typical core courses can include anatomy and physiology, phlebotomy, pharmacology, clinical lab science skills, administrative skills, psychology and limited radiology. Limited radiology courses can qualify you to sit for a radiology practical technician (RPT) certification exam, administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). You can also expect to serve an externship as a clinical medical assistant. Both the CAAHEP and ABHES recognize online programs, which require you to complete some in-person components.

Which Schools Offer Associate's Degrees for Clinical Assistants?

Students can choose to study clinical and medical assisting from myriad programs across the country. Options include day or evening classes; morning classes are also available.

  • North Seattle College offers an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in medical assisting
  • Berkeley College offers an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in for medical assistants
  • Los Angeles ORT College offers an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program for medical and clinical assistants

Do I Need Certification?

The BLS stated that while certification is not legally required, it can signify your professionalism, quality of training and capabilities. The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) administers the certified medical assistant (CMA) examination. American Medical Technologists (AMT) administers the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification examination. Both associations require you to have completed a program accredited by either CAAHEP or ABHES.

Students entering into clinical assistant programs will likely study topics like medical terminology, medication administration, and patient care. These programs are offered at the associate's degree level and are widely available.
