What Is a Computer Science Bachelor's Degree Program?

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) programs focus on technical applications of computers and computer networks. Most of these programs take four years to complete and teach you the skills needed to work in the information technology (IT) departments of many businesses. Admissions requirements for most BSCS programs include a high school diploma or its equivalent and submission of SAT or ACT scores. Some programs have minimum high school GPA requirements.

Bachelor's programs in computer science are available in both online and campus-based formats. Some online programs require a minimum number of postsecondary credits prior to enrollment, while others have the same admissions requirements as campus-based programs.

What Courses Can I Expect?

Your computer science bachelor's program will include general education coursework, in addition to core courses in software engineering, computer architecture, computer algorithms, data structures and scientific computing. You'll study Linux, UNIX and Microsoft Windows operating systems. You'll also learn how to use computer programming languages, troubleshoot computer networks, develop software programs and manage databases. Advanced mathematics courses, like linear algebra and calculus, are often part of the curriculum as well. You may need to complete an internship in order to earn your degree.
