What Programs in Computer Systems Technology Are Available?

Computer systems technology (also known as computer information systems) is most common as an Associate of Applied Science degree program, but is available as a certificate and at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. What Will I Study in Certificate and Associate's Programs?

In the certificate program, you'll focus your study on PC networks and computer systems. Along with customer service skills, you'll prepare to sit for the Computer Technology Industry Association A+ certification exam, which qualifies you for employment as a computer service technician. This program may prepare you for advanced certificates or for entry into an associate's degree program.

If you're interested in helping computer users with troubleshooting and support, an associate's degree in computer systems technology will prepare you for employment. You'll study operating systems, networking systems and programming languages. You'll focus on connectivity issues, electronics, computer components and C++. You'll also spend time establishing business skills such as communication, marketing, management and customer service skills.

What About Bachelor's and Master's Programs?

The bachelor's degree program usually accepts credits from your associate's degree program. In the bachelor's degree program, you'll begin looking at the computer engineering components of computer systems technology. You'll study database administration, computer architecture, Web development, data warehousing, computer security and server technologies. Along with computer technology courses, you'll also study math, geometry, finance, technical writing and organizational behavior.

In the master's degree program, you'll study and research various methodologies. This program is an interdisciplinary program that combines math, business and computer science. You can add a concentration in business or computer informatics. Some of the subjects you'll study include computer graphics, data mining, bioinformatics, business systems and data models.

What Careers Can I Consider?

The higher level of education you receive, the more responsibilities you'll be able to take on. You can check the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) for certification in a number of computer service areas, including LINUX, security and networking. You can also earn certification as a computer service technician.
