What You Need to Know

You could complete a corrections certificate program with only two or three semesters of study, depending on if you take classes full- or part-time. These programs may include an externship opportunity. Two years of study could lead to earning an associate's degree, and the curriculum includes general education requirements, as well as externship or cooperative work experiences in a correctional facility. Both types of programs are available at community colleges.

Bachelor's degrees are also available. These programs take four years to complete, and you complete coursework and cooperative work experiences.

Corrections Officer Certificate Programs in New Jersey

Middlesex County College

Middlesex County College offers a 36-credit program leading to a certificate in correction administration. The program includes general education courses that you might apply toward fulfilling requirements for an associate's degree or bachelor's degree. Core course topics include corrections administration, criminal justice, and correctional institutions. You also have the opportunity to serve a for-credit externship at a school-partnered facility.

Offered through the school's Department of History and Social Sciences, the program can prepare you to enter the corrections field immediately upon graduation, or you transfer your credits to a 4-year, public postsecondary school in New Jersey. If you decide on this route, you'll have completed fully half the requirements needed for a bachelor's degree. You also have the option of pursuing a course in law enforcement and the community or an externship at a correctional facility.

In order to facilitate your participation and fit in your work schedule, the same class sessions are offered twice daily - in the mornings and evenings. In addition to general education courses, core courses in the program include corrections systems and administration, crime and delinquency, crime prevention, crisis intervention, and community corrections.
