What You Need to Know

Students interested in completing a formal education program in criminal justice may elect to earn a certificate, an associate's degree, or even a bachelor's degree in New Jersey. Certificates may be earned in two semesters to two years and are offered by two-year, public schools in the state. Associate's degrees in criminal justice may be earned in two years and are also available through two-year, public schools. A bachelor's degree in criminal justice is offered by a four-year, public school and takes four years to complete. Application requirements may include immunization records and a placement test; bachelor's degree students will need to provide an essay and two letters of recommendation.

Certificate Programs for Criminal Justice in New Jersey

Camden County College

You may enroll in this 24-credit program if you have no previous law enforcement analysis job experience. However, some analysts use the program for professional development. If you are an analyst without an associate's degree, you may be accepted into the program if you meet specified professional competencies. You are required to earn a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in three of the five core courses, which are crime mapping, crime analysis, intelligence analysis, criminal justice research and investigation analysis. The remaining courses in the program are logic and reasoning, statistics and your choice of one elective.

In less than two years, you can complete a 34- or 31-credit program leading to a Credit Certificate in Criminal Justice or Corrections. You can apply the credits earned in each program toward an Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice or Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice with a corrections option. Both programs carry six general education credit requirements. The criminal justice option includes courses such as criminal justice organization and administration, crisis intervention, criminology, criminal law of New Jersey and police community relations. Courses in the corrections option include probation and parole, drug and alcohol abuse, institutional treatment, corrections and investigation.

Camden County College

The 64-credit criminal justice program includes a number of general education courses and a basic course in computer literacy. If you qualify, the school recommends that you pursue a course in advanced computer concepts. Criminal justice-related courses include administration of justice, criminal law, juvenile delinquency, corrections, ethics, crime analysis and the legal system. You may have the option of entering the workforce immediately upon graduation or transferring a number of credits toward a 4-year degree program.

Mercer County Community College

Whether you select the law enforcement or corrections option leading to an Associate in Science in Criminal Justice, each program consists of a number of general education courses and an opportunity during your sophomore year to participate in a cooperative education unit at a school-partnered facility. Core courses in the law enforcement option include police administration, criminal law, criminology and police in the community. In the corrections option, core courses include community corrections, juvenile justice, criminal justice and corrections systems. Though most courses are presented during the day, there are some mandatory attendance requirements for evening courses.

If you are a graduate of the State and County Basic Training Course of the New Jersey Correctional Staff Training Academy, you may qualify to receive nine advanced standing credits in the corrections option. If you are a graduate of the Basic Course for Police Officers at a Police Academy, you may qualify to receive 12 advanced standing credits in the law enforcement option. Upon graduation, you have the option of entering the workforce immediately or transferring to a baccalaureate degree program at one of a number of 4-year universities in the state. The school is also home to the Mercer County Police Academy.

The Associate in Applied Science programs prepare you to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation. They also serve as career-advancement programs for in-service law enforcement and corrections professionals. If you intend to transfer to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts program, you should pursue the Associate in Arts program. The Associate in Arts program is offered on-campus or online.

Kean University

Offered through the university's School of Criminal Justice and Public Administration, the program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice should take you four years to complete. Core courses cover areas such as race and gender issues, criminal law, criminology, policing, corrections and victimology. You may have the opportunity to participate in field trips, in-service learning experiences and internships. You have the option to specialize in one of four tracks, which are law, general criminal justice, policing and corrections. You must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to graduate.
