What Will I Study?
In a culinary arts associate's program, you'll study culinary terminology, food preparation, baking and food safety. Most culinary arts programs include extensive hands-on training in a campus-based kitchen. These types of programs might prepare you for work as a baker or chef.
You'll examine the role food plays in different cultures through associate's and bachelor's programs in nutrition. Additional topics you might explore in these programs could include nutritional disorders and diseases, metabolism, dietary supplements and meal planning. Many nutrition and nutrition science programs won't require completion of any hands-on training components.
Culinary nutrition bachelor's completion programs combine topics from culinary arts and nutrition programs. You might study farming and agriculture; you'll learn how food gets from the farm to the table. You'll also study how nutrients and vitamins are processed by the body. Additional topics might include therapeutic cooking, vegetarian cuisine, organic chemistry, nutritional assessment, food packaging and whole foods. Many of your courses may take place in a campus-based bakery or cooking lab.
