Does the Department of Education Offer an Online College Directory?

The U.S. Department of Education provides a searchable online directory of colleges through the National Center for Education Statistics. Read on to learn more about what this directory has to offer.

Description of College Navigator

The U.S. Department of Education offers an online directory administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, called College Navigator. Students can access this online directory and search schools based on a variety of search criteria. Over 7000 post-secondary institutions are listed in this college directory, including colleges, universities, career and trade schools. All institutions in the directory have reputable accreditation.

Important Facts About College Navigator's Search Criteria

Institution Type Public, private non-profit, public for-profit
Program Lengths 4 years, 2 years, <2 years
Level of Award Certificate, associate's, bachelor's, advanced
Campus Setting Rural, suburban, town, city

How to Use the Directory

Students can use the College Navigator directory to search for information on a specific school, or to search for schools offering a desired program or in a particular geographic location. Students may narrow their search by selecting other search parameters, including tuition, student enrollment, acceptance rates, test score requirements and more. The site lets users compare colleges side-by-side, map school locations on an interactive map and download information into a spreadsheet. Searches can be saved.

Data Options

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) provides information for the College Navigator through surveys of colleges and universities. Information on program completion rates, student-to-faculty ratios, financial aid awards, housing options and much more is collected. The database also includes the school contact information, school accreditation, campus activities and religious affiliations.
