Does the Department of Education Have a List of All American Universities?

One of the functions of the U.S. Department of Education is collecting and providing information about schools throughout America. Those seeking to find information about specific colleges or universities can do so through the department's Institute of Education Sciences (IES). How to use the Department of Education website to find a list of all the American universities is addressed in the following article. Schools offering Education degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Department of Education List of American Universities

A list of American universities can be created using the College Navigator, an online tool available from the Department of Education and the IES' National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This tool can be accessed at www.nces.ed.gov. Both public and private American universities and colleges can be listed using the College Navigator.

Important Facts About College Navigator's Search Criteria

Institution Type Public, private non-profit, public for-profit
Program Lengths 4 years, 2 years, <2 years
Campus Setting Rural, suburban, town, city
Additional Considerations Religious affiliation, varsity athletic teams, percentage of applicants admitted

Public American Universities

On the College Navigator webpage, you can create a list of all public American universities by checking 'Public' under 'Institution Type'. You can highlight 'No Preference' under 'States' or use the map to choose all 50 states. You also have the option to select only 2- or 4-year American colleges or universities by checking the appropriate box under 'Institution Type'. For a list of both types of public schools, you can either check both boxes or leave both unchecked. Then click on the 'Show Results' box and a list of all public American universities will be displayed.

Private American Universities

You can also create a list of all private American universities by using the College Navigator. Follow the same steps as those described for public universities, but instead check 'Private' under 'Institution Type'. You might also check both 'Private' and 'Public' to create a combined list. When creating a list of private American universities, you have the option of choosing either not-for-profit and for-profit schools or both. For both private and public universities, you also have the choice to create lists of schools by specific degree types offered by clicking on the appropriate boxes under 'Level of Award'. These types include certificate, associate's, bachelor's and advanced degrees.
