NCES Database Overview

NCES, which falls under the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, maintains a database of colleges, universities, career and trade schools that have accreditation from a reliable organization or approval agency. The U.S. Secretary of Education recognizes reliable accreditation bodies.

Using the Database

Users can access the database through the NCES College Navigator (www.nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/). College Navigator allows you to search by school name, location, type of program, degree level and institution type, with the option to customize several options. The search returns a list of schools that match the criteria, with links to informational pages on each school. College Navigator also can display schools on an interactive map, compare schools side by side and allow results to be exported into a spreadsheet. Users can save their sessions so they can find their results again at a later time.

School Information Pages

College Navigator has an informational page for each school in their database. These pages offer a basic overview at the top, including school type, what degree programs the school offers, location, whether housing is available for students, student population and student-to-faculty ratio. Each page also has a number of expandable tabs with further information, such as tuition costs, financial aid availability, admission statistics, graduation statistics and a list of available majors, as well as other information. Each school information page also has a direct link to the school's website and a Google map of the school's location.
