What You Need to Know

Enrolling in an associate's degree or certificate program could give you training you need for an EMT career. Certificates usually require a year of study, and they prepare you for the registry examination. Associate's degree programs require about two years of study. They also prepare you for the exam and include requirements for general education courses.

EMT Certificate Program in New York City

CUNY LaGuardia Community College

For the paramedic certificate program, you complete classes (800 hours) and clinical rotations (600 hours) over the 1-year period. Your classroom time includes classroom instruction, skills lab, review of the National Registry exam and review of program policy and testing. The clinical portion includes clinical rotations and a field internship.

CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College

You take courses in physiology, anatomy and chemistry. Core paramedic courses include five courses in emergency medical care, along with three clinical rotations. During the clinical rotations, you receive training at the City Morgue as well as various departments in a hospital. You continue your training in the emergency room, as well as gaining experience with an EMT ambulance team.

Paramedic topics covered in the associate's degree program include medical ethics, pharmacology, medication administration and pulmonology.
