Nashville-area students can elect to earn a certificate as an EMT at the basic level or a technical certificate at the paramedic level. An EMT-Basic training program takes one semester to complete, while a paramedic technical certificate may be completed in four semesters or one year, depending on the school. Paramedic training programs are available only to individuals already certified as EMTs-Basic.

Nashville EMT-Basic Training Programs

Volunteer State Community College

Located about a half hour northeast of Tennessee, Volunteer State Community College (VSCC), often referred to as 'Vol State' by students, offers EMT-Basic education. Enrollment is limited to no more than 16 students each semester. Their EMT-Basic training program includes 18 total credit hours to be taken over four courses. VSCC's program includes clinical practice at an off-campus location, along with courses covering EMS theory, pre-hospital anatomy and physiology, and introductory pharmacology.

Students must complete all clinical and didactic portions of the program before they are eligible to take the NREMT or state licensing tests. Graduates are also qualified for the state EMT-IV extended skills licensing test. Of note, 'Vol State' notes a better than 72 percent job placement rate for graduates as recently as 2010.

Columbia State Community College

About 40 miles southwest of Nashville sits Columbia State Community College. It is the oldest community college in the state. Columbia offers an EMT-IV (Intravenous Therapy) basic training program. While there is traditional class learning, students must also complete 96 hours of clinical rotations as part of their training. Volunteer State Community College
