There are limited program options available to students near Pittsburgh interested in a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT) or a paramedic. Individuals may complete basic emergency medical technician (EMT) training at a two-year, public school or choose to complete an associate's degree program as a paramedic. Basic EMT training requires one semester of coursework to be completed. An associate's degree may be earned in as little as five months for full-time students on the fast track; some paramedic programs may take two years to complete. Paramedic degree programs require that applicants be already certified at the EMT-Basic level.

The EMT-basic course, offered by the Community College of Allegheny County's Institute of Public Safety, is designed for emergency medical service personnel and ambulance crews, but can be useful to anyone who responds to emergency medical situations.
