Education Trade Publications Online: Times Higher Education Reviewed

Like much traditional print media, education trade publications are beginning to form an online presence. In a series of articles that will continue this week, the websites of some prominent education trade publications will be discussed. Today's article focuses on the website of ''Times Higher Education.'' Schools offering Children`s Book Illustration degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

Times Higher Education is a U.K.-based news magazine that is available in both print and online editions. The majority of the online edition's content is free. Subscribers get both the paper copy and the digital edition delivered to their physical and email addresses. There is also an app for digital access.

Though Times Higher Education is from the U.K. and the bulk of its coverage focuses on that nation, there is also international commentary. Part of the magazine's global coverage includes a ranking of the world's top academic institutions.

In addition to academic coverage, Times Higher Education also includes a culture section. This section has a textbook guide for subjects like literature, environmental sciences and geography, medicine, history and biosciences. Many of the textbooks covered here are global or international editions. The culture section also has movie reviews, commentary on art and literature, discussion of television shows and general commentary.

How Useful Is It?

Even though Times Higher Education is U.K.-based, it still holds relevance for U.S. readers. When I visited the site, there were stories about academics in the U.S. and the relationship between the higher education systems of the U.S. and U.K. This and other international coverage makes the paper relevant even for academic professionals without a specific reason to follow U.K. higher education news.

The job posting section mostly focuses on jobs in the U.K., but even this is likely to be useful to some U.S. readers. It would be a great place to start if you're an academic professional looking to work abroad. International college rankings on the site are also useful; students in the U.S. who are interested in studying abroad can use them as a guide for schools they might attend.

The articles and editorial content are interesting, informative and well written. The U.K. domestic issues may not always hold interest or relevance for readers in the U.S., but I definitely think that the site is worth perusing. Beyond the education news content, the culture section is fantastic and may be of interest for students, teachers and intellectually curious adults of all nationalities.

This is the fourth article in a series about education trade publications online. Previously, 'The Chronicle of Higher Education', 'Inside Higher Ed' and 'Diverse Issues in Higher Education' were discussed. Stay tuned for more reviews this week.
