Electroencephalograph Technician (EEG) Degree Programs

Electroencephalograph (EEG) technician degree programs teach students how to recognize abnormalities in a patient's nervous system. Learn about what programs are available, courses you may take and certification.

What Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technician Degree Programs Are Available?

You won't be able to find any degree programs solely covering EEG technician training. EEG training is a smaller focus that can be found in an electroneurodiagnostic (END) technology program. Along with EEG training, END programs can also cover polysomnography, long term epilepsy monitoring, nerve conduction studies, evoked potential and intraoperative monitoring.

The highest level of education offered for an END program is an associate's degree. These are 2-year degree programs that often result in an Associate of Science. You might be able to find schools offering distance education programs for this area of study, but you will be expected to complete laboratory courses and clinical work in person. Your program may require you to complete hands-on training with medical equipment, patient results, patient communication and equipment maintenance.

Degree LevelsAssociate's programs available
Course TopicsNeuroscience, medical terminology, human growth, nerve conduction
CertificationAvailable through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists
Median Salary (2018) $61,240 (for all radiologic and MRI technologists
Job Outlook (2016-2026) 13% growth (for all radiologic and MRI technologists

What Courses Can I Expect?

Your program might teach you to take patient medical histories, identify brain activity during different mental states, work with various age groups, recognize neurological disorders and calibrate END medical equipment. These programs might also educate you in how the brain functions, the effects brain disorders have on the rest of the body and how to measure brain activities for extended periods of time.

You can expect to complete courses in patient care techniques, human anatomy, human growth, physiology, medical terminology and pathologic conditions. There might also be some courses focusing on the brain including neuroscience, intraoperative monitoring, neuroanatomy and nerve conduction. These programs may require you to complete general education courses in mathematics, English compositions, psychology, sociology and communications.

Can I Earn Certification?

There are no certifications offered for EEG technicians. If you decide to advance your career, you may be able to earn certification as an EEG technologist. If you have earned an associate's degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and completed one year of EEG experience, you may qualify to take the certification exam provided by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologist (ABRET). To qualify, you may also need to have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
