Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management Associate's Degree

Your career in management can begin with an associate's degree program in entrepreneurship and small business management. This article looks at the typical business and accounting courses found in a degree program, and how you can take your courses.

What Will I Learn With An Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management Associate's Degree?

You can earn an Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management at a community college or technical school. Some colleges also allow you to pursue an Associate of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and small business management. These programs generally last two years or less and teach you how to turn ideas into thriving businesses and brands.

While enrolled in such a program, you should learn the basics of accounting, human resources, business finances and marketing in relation to how you manage a small business. Many of the programs will also give you an opportunity to develop a business plan and test the feasibility of a new business as a way to give you hands-on training. Your classes should be designed to teach you basic business practices, as well as how to grow a company and build a brand. Once you earn your associate's degree, you may be able to continue your studies and earn a bachelor's degree that relates to business management or entrepreneurship.

What Kind of Classes Might I Take?

Your classes are likely to introduce you to business theory and then show you how to apply that theory to real-world situations. Outside of business, you'll learn about finances, business law and market research. Your courses may include:

  • Principles of accounting
  • Developing a small business
  • Principles of management
  • Introduction to business
  • Introduction to marketing
  • Human relations and resources
  • Business communication and computers
  • Introduction to E-commerce

Can I Study Online?

A handful of colleges will allow you to earn your A.S. in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management online. The limited number of distance-learning programs gives you a chance to take some or all of your courses using just your computer. However, because of the hands-on nature of the degree program, on-campus classes are more common.
