What Environmental Law Degree Programs Are Available Online?

Environmental law is most often available as a course in a legal studies program. The classes, which may be offered online, can also be found in an environmental science program or an environmental policy program. They cover the basic needs for working with the environment.

What is Environmental Law?

Environmental law covers topics that promote the safety and well-being of people and protects the environment. Due to constantly changing technology, new dangers to the earth creep up constantly. Environmental law professionals must know the most recent state, county and federal laws surrounding the environment with a historical perspective.

What Will I Study?

There are two degree levels that are common when studying environmentalism; one is the Master of Environmental Law and Policy (MELP), the other is the Master of Laws (LLM) and Juris Doctor (J.D.). The first focuses on one aspect of the environment, such as natural resources, climate change or pollution. During your study, you spend time looking at energy law, international environmental laws, water pollution, air pollution, hazardous waste laws, wetland laws, wildlife protection, health law, sustainability, land use and the environment in the media. It is easier to find than the J.D. program, because doctorates often focus on environmental studies or environmental management with environmental law as a sub-field.

However, some colleges offer the Juris Doctor in Environmental Law as a dual program with the master's degree. If you opt for one of these programs, you spend the majority of your time earning credits for both a master's and doctoral degree. You concentrate on learning a basic knowledge of law while focusing on ways to help the environment through legal systems.
