Event Planning Courses

Event planners coordinate large events for businesses, charities and other organizations. Discover what you will learn in an event planning course, what programs offer these classes, and how online courses work.

What Event Planning Courses are Available?

You can learn how to plan events, from start to finish, to satisfy customer expectations. You will prepare for the unique demands of event planning, including developing skills in marketing and executing events for corporate meetings, fundraisers, trade shows, associations and organizations. Some of the courses you can expect to take include:

Basic Meeting Planning

This course will lay the groundwork for the skills you will need for effective event planning. It will cover topics such as budgeting, organization, marketing, and management.

Advanced Meeting Planning

This course will build on the basic skills you have learned to address more specific and complex problems that event planning requires. These issues may include contingency planning, diversity/inclusion, and environmentally responsible planning.

Communications

Planning events requires strong communication skills. Communications courses will teach you how to effectively communicate with vendors, clients, program participants, speakers, and other stakeholders in the event planning process.

Managing Food and Beverage Service

In this course, you will learn about the logistics of planning food and beverage service at events. Some of the topics covered in this course include service standards and regulatory compliance.

Convention and Trade Show Management

This type of class focuses on event planning issues specific to conventions and trade shows. You will learn how these large events get planned, including marketing, vendor involvement, and working with convention centers and hotels.

Which Programs Offer These Courses?

You can find event planning courses through a variety of bachelor's degree programs, such as the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Tourism, Conventions and Event Management; B.S. in Marketing with a specialization in event management; or Bachelor of Art in Hospitality Management. You can also find courses through certificate and associate's degree programs.

How Do Online Courses Work?

You will use online tools, including e-mail, discussion boards and video chat, to interact with your professor and access course materials. You may also be required to assist with an actual event as part of an internship course.
