What Fashion Illustrator Majors Are Available?

Fashion illustrators create sketches and drawings for clothing pattern companies, magazines, newspapers, clothing stores and fashion designers. Bachelor's degree programs in fashion illustration aren't very common, but many bachelor's degree programs in fashion design offer courses in fashion illustration.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Illustration degree programs are also available and can help prepare you for a career in fashion illustration. If you would like to become a fashion designer and be able to create your own drawings, a BFA in Fashion Design may help you reach your career goals. If you're more interested in a general education in illustration, you might choose to earn a BFA in Illustration and then take elective classes and design studio courses in fashion illustration.

Unfortunately, due to the hands-on nature of the field and studio requirements, distance learning programs in fashion design and illustration aren't very common. Some schools, however, do offer offer online programs in these fields.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

The most basic prerequisite for a fashion design or illustration major is a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Some schools also require applicants to demonstrate their creative potential through the submission of a portfolio of their work. Although uncommon, associate's degree programs in fashion illustration are also available. Students who have completed an associate's degree in this field may find that some of the credits earned can be transferred to a bachelor's degree program in fashion design or illustration.

What Will I Learn?

In a fashion design major, you'll learn how to draw the human form using live models and study how various fabrics drape across the human body. You'll also study the visual language of fashion in courses that look at the fashion figure and rendering techniques. You'll also learn how to create patterns, utilizing techniques in computerized pattern making.

As an illustration major, you'll take general classes in the various forms of traditional and computer illustration. You'll learn how to draw both the nude and clothed human figure. You'll work with a variety of mediums, including pen and ink, watercolors, acrylics and computer software programs. Depending on the program, you might also complete a senior project, portfolio project or internship.
