What Resources Are Available?

The DOE's website has a lot of information pertaining to education policy and governance. There are also great resources for teachers, parents, students and prospective students. Site visitors can find info on standardized testing, student loans, college and other topics. Educators will appreciate lesson planning tools and information about teaching jobs. Following are some useful sections on the Department of Education website.

Student Loan Information

The student loan info section features a very straightforward directory that is split into two categories, one for those seeking loans, and one for those who already have loans. Under the loan seeker's column, there are links to information about eligibility, a loan estimate calculator and information about how to fund your education. There's also a link to the website for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the standard application for aid. Under the loan holder's column, there are links to information about student loan forgiveness and payback, resources for those who have defaulted on their student loans and the option to either defer or cancel already-granted loans.

Grants

Visit the DOE site to learn about grants to help fund your education. Grants are available not only for students, but also organizations and individuals not enrolled in school. The main student grant is the Pell Grant, a need-based federal award for those enrolled in postsecondary education programs. A link to information on the Pell Grant program can be found on this page.

Agencies, organizations and individuals can apply for discretionary grants from the DOE. There is a link to an overview of education programs that can help you determine how to apply for a discretionary grant. The grants page also features links to financial award competitions that you might be eligible to enter. This is a good place to start if you are wondering how to fund certain projects in a school, charity or another education-based organizations.

United States Education Dashboard

The Dashboard is a repository of statistics and other information about education at the national and state levels. The site was created in response to President Obama's stated goal of having the world's highest proportion of college-matriculated citizens by 2020. Data presented in the Dashboard is intended to track our progress toward that goal.

In both the state and national statistics views, data is split into categories. There is information on everything from the number of college graduates to the proportion of 3- and 4-year olds enrolled in preschool in a given year. If you're interested in looking at education facts and figures, this is a great resource for you.

Teach.gov

This website of the Department of Education is geared toward the recruitment of teachers for public schools in the U.S. There are job search applications and other resources for those who are already qualified, or will soon be qualified, to teach. If you are not yet on the path to becoming a teacher, but are considering it, there are resources on the site for you, too. These tools include incentive information and advice on what steps to take to become a teacher.
