Before the 1939 Judy Garland movie, there was L. Frank Baum's original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story describes the orphan Dorothy's adventures in the magical Land of Oz as she tries to return home. While battling the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy is joined by the Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow.

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel tells the story of a young girl named Alice who travels to a fantastical world after following the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole. She encounters a wide array of strange creatures in Wonderland, including the Cheshire Cat, the Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Carroll's writing is highly imaginative and full of wit, making this an appealing title for both children and adults.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

First published in 1843, A Christmas Carol is Charles Dickens' tale of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge. After many years of miserly behavior, Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns Scrooge to change his ways. Throughout the night, Scrooge is visited by three more ghosts, with each showing him a different time and place in order to help him become a better person.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

Mark Twain's 1876 novel covers the mischievous exploits of Tom Sawyer, a boy living in Missouri. In one vignette, Tom tricks his friends into whitewashing a fence for him as though he is doing them a favor. Later, he falls in love and pursues Becky Thatcher, with mixed results. A major section of the novel concerns Tom accompanying his friend Huckleberry Finn, as well as Huck's friend Joe Harper, to an island to play pirates. While they are there, the townspeople believe Tom and his friends to be dead, leading Tom to decide to surprise everyone by appearing at his funeral.
