Free Days College Students Should Know About

When it comes to getting outside and engaging in activities, there are plenty of free days college students should know about. These free days can be found at museums and zoos, among other places.

Free Outings For College Students

Living on a fixed income is as difficult for a student as it is for a retired adult. You're just learning to pay for all of your own expenses and activities, and you're doing it on a tight budget. Anything that is free without hidden costs is something you'll want to pursue. Across the nation, state and government agencies offer free days that can provide learning opportunities and escapes with friends.

Museums

Many states provide free admission days to local museums for residents, and in Washington, D.C., museums like the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian are always free. From art museums to science museums, these often publicly-funded facilities can be excellent spring boards for research papers. Studying archeology? Better check out that display on Egyptian artifacts at the history (or art) museum. Going to museums can also be a great way to unwind from your studies. Check out local museum sites to find free days, or check out a site like freemuseumday.org to find free day offerings in major cities.

State Parks

Every now and then students need to leave musty libraries and stuffy dorm rooms. Experience all that nature has to offer with a free admission day to a state park. Washington State Parks offer free days on some of the national holidays. The National Get Outdoors Day organization works with the U.S. Forest Service so that some parks outside of Washington offer free admission on that day. The purpose is to get people outdoors and active to eliminate obesity.

If you want to try something new, the Department of Fish and Game also offer free days for those who want to do some fishing without a license! Some, like the California's Department of Fish and Wildlife, provide free classes so you can learn how to fish and clean your catches.

Zoos

In the off season, the zoos lose visitors. They can, however, make money in the gift shop or on concession sales. This is why some zoos offer free days. The Denver Zoo has plenty of days set aside for free admission. Check with your local zoo to see if they offer free days.

Events

Does your college have a great NCAA team? If so, you may be able to go the NCAA tournaments for free. You can also get into some concerts or plays for free, provided you have a student ID with you. While this is not guaranteed for all events, there are great benefits for being a college student. Check local sites and college events to see what events may be free to you.
