It also plays a role in manufacturing a variety of goods, from pharmaceuticals and plastics to food and detergents. You can study biotechnology online for free through several noncredit college and university courses. You'll need a PDF viewer to access some course materials, and certain courses require special software. Some classes require prerequisite coursework while others were designed to include hands-on labs and projects.


Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT's OpenCourseWare (OCW) system provides access to free classes that were originally taught to campus students. These classes include access to notes, assignments and reading materials, many of which you can download for free. Below are three courses you can study online.

Experimental Molecular Biotechnology: Biotechnology II

A team of four instructors teach this undergraduate course that was offered Spring 2005. This class is designed with a lab component for students to practice using protocols. Although you won't need to do experiments, you can still view PDF materials on what lab procedures were done.

What Will I Learn?

The course focuses on molecular biology and apoptosis, or programmed cell death (PCD). You could learn how PCD functions and how to inhibit its progress in Drosophila cells. The course offers information on nine lab protocols for you to review. These include basic bioinformatics, in vitro transcription, fungene transcription and S2 cell culture. You'll find background information on laboratory protocols, experiment design and lab notebooks.

What Materials Are Provided?

You can review slides on mammalian cell apoptosis and view movie clips from a guest lecturer (you will need QuickTime Player installed on your computer to view). Course materials include lectures on scientific communication, instructions on writing research papers and reviewing literature, and downloadable assignments and examples of student work. Suggested reading and a demonstration video are also accessible.

Analysis of Biomolecular Kinetics and Cellular Dynamics

This undergraduate course was first made available in Spring 2006 and updated for the Fall 2012 semester. While you won't be able to interact with instructors or other students, you can view PDF versions of problems set assignments and exams.

What Will I Learn?

The course focuses on the principles of biological molecules and the relationships between extracellular and intracellular functions and biotechnology applications. You can also learn about computational modeling, experimental methods and quantitative analysis as they apply to biotechnology.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

Assignments consist of problem sets and solutions, including three sets of practice exam problems and solutions. Also provided are links to problems sets on related courses: Modeling of Cellular Systems, and Modeling and Manipulating Biomolecular Interaction.

Molecular Principles of Biomaterials

MIT originally introduced Molecular Principles of Biomaterials as an on-campus graduate course in Spring 2006. You can now take it online for free.

What Will I Learn?

You can learn how to design and analyze materials used in biotechnology and biomedical engineering systems. The course covers the interactions between synthetic and biological molecules and processing materials involved in controlling cell functions.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You'll have access to two exams, including one consisting of questions and another requiring a six-page analysis of an immunization strategy. The course provides answers for the first exam and a bibliography for the second test.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course includes PDF versions of five problem sets and solutions. Other materials consist of a reading list with links to textbooks you can purchase and annotated lecture notes you can download.
