Where Can I Find Free Online Courses for Game Programming?

Access to online game programming courses you can study for free are available at accredited postsecondary schools, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These classes cover such topics as games theory and functional programming languages. Keep reading to find out what else you could learn through these noncredit courses. Schools offering Game Production degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

If you're interested in programming the next cutting-edge video game, you don't have to pay to increase your knowledge in this area - you can find free, online game programming courses like those discussed below. These classes were traditionally designed to include a lot of collaborative work in labs and group discussions with instructor feedback, which is not provided in the free-based versions.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

MIT's free classes in game programming are available using the school's OpenCourseWare (OCW) website. These classes were traditionally offered to undergraduate and graduate students on campus. The online versions do not award course credit. You can access information for the following three courses on OCW.

Videogame Theory and Analysis

Taught by Dr. Alice Robinson, this course was originally made available to undergrads and grad students in the Fall 2006 semester. You can access course materials, assignments and exams to study at your own pace.

What Will I Learn?

You will analyze videogames, study modern game theory and create your own videogame. This course examines issues related to the social, cultural and educational impact of commercial videogames.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You will complete writing assignments on choosing a game along with two essays that may deal with analyzing the game's theories, ideas and user audience. A example paper is provided. Completing assignments is optional because you won't interact with instructors in this OCW course.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course provides PDF files of assignments and links to articles, journals and textbook readings. A PDF on Game Analysis and Presentation Guidelines as well as links to discussion forums are accessible from the Labs tab. From the Lecture Notes tab, you can access links to pages with audio podcasts and an example of a code used to embed RealMedia Files.

Programming Languages

This programming languages course was initially offered to MIT graduate students. This course assumes that you have expertise in programming and college-level math.

What Will I Learn?

This course covers logic, imperative and functional programming languages. You will study object-oriented programming, multiprocessing, modules, type systems and meta-circular interpreters.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You will complete eight problem sets with no solutions, as well as eight exams, three of which have solutions. One exam has a format similar to the Jeopardy television game show. Instructors don't review assignments for this course.

What Materials Are Provided?

You can download a report, lab notes and guidelines on using the SCHEME+ algorithmic programming language required to complete course assignments. You will need special software to use some course materials.

Computer Games and Simulations for Education and Exploraton

This course from Professor Eric Klopfer was originally taught to undergraduate and graduate students. This is a free non-credit course that doesn't include feedback from instructors.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn to understand and design computer learning games and simulations. This course examines how people learn by using interactive games, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using games for learning.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You will write a paper that describes the purpose of a computer game or simulation and include a drawing. You will also develop a program for the game and describe how it works and helps people learn.

What Materials Are Provided?

Materials include PDF files containing information on board and video games developed by students who completed the original MIT class. Links to an number of reading materials as well as textbooks you can purpose are also included.
