Where Can I Find Free Online Cyber Security Courses?

Free online cyber security courses are provided by Open University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University. Students will have access to various course materials available for independent study.

What You Need to Know

Accredited universities and online college platforms offer non-credit courses in cyber security at no cost to you. Some of the topics you may learn about include crypotography, authentication, software protection, viruses and firewalls. Courses on the history of security software may be available as well. Your course may include readings, video lectures, and optional assignments.


Stanford University

Stanford University's Entrepreneurship Corner website offers a series of video lectures on cyber security by John Thompson who, at the time of the presentation, was Chief Executive Officer of Symantec Corporation. You can access the lectures for free.

What Do the Lectures Cover?

Thompson's topics include 'What is the History of Security Software,' 'Changes in Enterprise Software' and 'Customer Diversity is Essential.' Other cyber security topics include identification technology, anti-virus software and the need for affordable security technology for small firms.

What Materials Are Provided?

The Entrepreneurship Corner website provides a list of Thompson's lectures, which can be viewed in video format at the website. The lectures can also be downloaded, once you sign up for it.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers an OpenCourseWare (OCW) version of the for-credit network and computer security course originally offered to graduate students. You can take this OCW non-credit course for free.

What Will I Learn?

The course covers methods of providing security for computer networks and distributed computer systems. Other topics include e-mail and Web security.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You could complete five problem sets, some with solutions. The course provides lecture notes and readings from a textbook and several other publications. None of the assignments will be turned in.
