Where Can I Find Free Online Literature Courses?

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) OpenCourseWare (OCW) has free versions of for-credit undergraduate courses taught on campus in the past. These non-credit courses can be completed at your own pace.

What Courses Are Available?

The Contemporary Literature course materials are arranged as they were used for the Spring 2003 course, which focused on Irish literature. For a peek into the past, there's a Medieval Literature: Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer course, which provides an overview of the three famous authors of the Middle Ages. There's also the Victorian Literature and Culture course, which explores literature in Britain between 1837 and 1901.

What Will I Learn?

Each MIT Open Courseware literature course focuses on the poetry, drama and fiction of major writers in the time period and/or location in focus. The courses often explores themes or styles which are common to authors in the time period and topics of cultural importance for the period.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

The schedule for reading assignments is often included for the course, although you may complete the reading at your own pace. Many English courses require essays instead of tests, and the information for writing the essays as for the original course is often provided. Sometimes, a course will also come with short exams. You will not receive a grade or evaluation for completing the assignments.

What Materials Are Provided?

Each course will provide a list of the textbooks used in the original course, although many also provide a few links to excerpts of poetry, prose, and songs, and/or supplemental reading. In the Medieval Literature course, supplemental reading can be downloaded for further study. A list of lecture topics may appear in the syllabus, but no lecture notes are provided.
