Where Can I Find Free Online Probability Courses?

Access free online probability courses through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Continue reading to find out what you could learn in these self-paced courses. Schools offering Mathematics degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

Studying probability can give you the mathematical skills to calculate and rank the likely outcomes of many everyday events and actions. You can also potentially help your career by strengthening your analytical skills. Online probability courses like those below are available for free online, but they won't award you credit. In general, these courses include lecture notes, lists of recommended readings, problem sets, practice tests and optional exams.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT offers multiple courses in probability. An introduction to probability and statistics class is an OpenCourseWare (OCW) course that was first available to undergraduate students on campus. Also offered is a probability and random variables course that offers free use of materials, but doesn't provide credit or communication with instructors. This online course assumes that you have knowledge of multivariable calculus.

Another OCW course, fundamentals of probability was originally taught to graduate students at the MIT campus. You can access materials without enrolling for this course, which doesn't provide credit. It is recommended that you have basic knowledge of probability and real analysis, for the course.

Introduction to Probability and Statistics

What Will I Learn?

This course introduces you to basic probability and statistics, while providing examples of practical applications. Concepts covered include the central limit theorem, linear regression and continuous probability distributions.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

There are nine problem sets, with solutions, and two practice tests with solutions. This course also provides two exams, and a final exam, with solutions. Practice problem sets accompany the exams.

What Materials Are Included?

Class slides cover topics ranging from conditional probability to probability intervals. You can also study reviews of the solutions which correspond to the class slides. Readings are available with questions, in the form of PDFs. Studio resources and related resources are also provided.

Probability and Random Variables

What Topics Will I Study?

In this course you'll study the basics of probability and random variables, including hypergeometric, exponential, uniform and geometric distributions. The law of large numbers, Bayes theorem, conditional probability and Chebyshev inequality are among several other topics covered.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

This course makes three exam reviews available, from different semesters, and ten problem sets that include questions from the course textbook. Solutions are included for the exams but not the problem sets.

What Materials Are Provided?

There are readings in the course textbook on topics such as jointly distributed random variables and continuous random variables. You can buy the textbook through a link on the readings Web page.

Fundamentals of Probability

What Will I Learn?

This course is designed for graduate students seeking comprehensive knowledge of probability. You will study topics such as continuous and discrete random variables, multivariate normal distribution, limit theorems and abstract integration.

What Materials Are Provided?

Midterm and final exams, from different semesters, consist of problems and solutions. You can prepare for exams by studying a review of materials the course covers. 11 problem sets are provided, in addition to 26 lecture notes.
