Where Can I Find Free Online SQL Training Programs and Courses?

Free online SQL training programs and courses are available through numerous accredited colleges and universities. Keep reading to find out what you can learn and what materials you'll need.

Overview of Free Online SQL Courses

Structured Query Language, or SQL, is used to manage information in database servers such as ORACLE or Informix. Whether you're new to computer programming or are attempting to expand upon your current level of expertise, several postsecondary schools offer free online tutorials and guides with introductory and advanced step-by-step SQL protocols. Although you can access most materials in these non-credit courses without special software or equipment, most courses recommend that you have a database server and integrated development environment, like Visual Basic. Read about three schools with online SQL training materials below.

Stanford University

Stanford offers a free mini-course that provides a comprehensive examination of SQL as it is used with relational database systems. Though not required, the school recommends that students complete an introductory mini-course about relational databases before enrolling.

As with all courses in Stanford's Database series, this course presupposes a background in computer science. Students looking to gain more experience before enrolling can also complete the course about relational algebra.

Baruch College - the City University of New York

This SQL tutorial, written by a professor, is offered on a series of Web pages and includes both text step-by-step instructions and accompanying screenshots. This 7-chapter tutorial includes an introduction to SQL command tools for an ORACLE database server. Oracle products, SQL language information, advanced SQL*Plus commands and trigger syntax are also discussed.

You will need an Oracle database server to develop applications for SQL*Plus. The tutorial also recommends access to PowerBuilder, Visual Basic or Java.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

This tutorial is offered as part of an OpenCourseWare course on spatial database management and advanced geographic information systems. The SQL tutorial is divided into a series of labs, each of which focuses on a particular aspect of database management. Students learn about different types of databases and their various applications, with course topics including SQL setup and SQL*Plus formatting.
