How Do I Find a French Cooking School?

There are non-accredited, private, for-profit institutions that advertise themselves as French cooking schools. Though some of their courses or programs may satisfy you, a little investigating might be advisable before you invest your time and money. There are a couple of good sources you can use to locate accredited, reliable institutions that offer training in French cuisine.

One of the features of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) website is an online, searchable database of postsecondary education institutions. A search yields nearly 500 schools that offer certificate or degree programs in culinary arts, chef training, cooking or related services. French cooking technique or French cuisine classes may be available in a school's culinary arts or hospitality department.

The American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF) is a professional organization for chefs and cooks. The Education Foundation Accrediting Commission of the ACF is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. On its website, the ACF maintains a list of accredited schools offering certificates, diplomas and degrees dealing with culinary arts.

Can I Find Online Training?

Online French cooking lessons are rare. You may be able to learn about French cooking online through private, for-profit organizations, schools that aren't accredited or websites not affiliated with a school. Often these programs are delivered as tutorials or videos. Some information is also available by way of online French cooking magazines or recipe books. These are all generally intended as personal-development courses and don't carry any academic credits.

What Are Some Available Programs?

Depending on the school, it can take you 20-24 months to complete a 60-99 credit program leading to an associate's degree in culinary arts. Often, schools require you to complete the associate's degree program in order to be admitted to their bachelor's degree program.

Bachelor's degree programs vary from 124-199 credits and can take 38-48 months to complete. Typical French cooking-related courses common to each program can include Mediterranean cuisine, classical French cuisine, international cuisine and international pastry. Bachelor's degree programs may also include French language studies.

Both degree programs often entail an externship at a school-approved food service operation. Externships might be paid positions and can last as long as 18 weeks. Depending on a school's affiliations, you may have the opportunity to serve your externship in France.
