Fridge: The Safer Social Network for Students and Career Seekers

There's a need for balance between privacy and sharing in social networks, and not everyone is comfortable with the concept of putting their private information out for public consumption on the Internet. A new social network called Fridge aims to allow users to share information on a limited basis, but is more social networking really the answer to the privacy problem? Schools offering Animation degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

The Paradox of Social Networking

You don't need to look hard for evidence of the fact that your activities online are not private. If you're not careful, your conduct on social networking sites can lead to serious consequences. And that doesn't just apply to libidinous congressmen - as social media becomes a normal part of life, more and more employers are checking out applicants' online presence as part of their screening process.

It can be difficult to determine what's 'appropriate' to display online. Social networks are appealing because they give us an outlet to showcase our personalities in a way we might not get to in daily life. But still, what you put out there can come back to haunt you, even if you think you're being careful.

The fine line we walk when participating in social media doesn't just apply to professional scenarios. It's also possible that you don't want your mom to see your Facebook posts or Tweets about what you did last Friday night. But still, the whole point of social media is to stay connected with people. If you don't want your mom to see those pictures of you at that bar, but you do want her to see those pictures you took at Christmas, you might have to jump through some hoops.

Is Fridge the Solution?

If you find yourself in this situation often, you might want to check out Fridge, a new social network that aims to help people compartmentalize and control their online presence. The basic structure of Fridge revolves around groups, allowing you to keep your professional contacts, friends, family and other groups separate. That way, if you want to share photos of a wild weekend with your friends - but you don't want anyone else to see them - you'll be able to do so. Only people invited to a specific group can see the content posted to that group.

With Fridge, you can share pictures, send messages and create events with each of your groups. It's a good solution to the social networking problem of wanting to share with people, but not everyone. Fridge might be particularly useful for educational and professional applications, since it doesn't revolve around a personal profile the way Facebook does, but rather around a group. Teachers interested in incorporating social networking into their class could start a Fridge group and not have to worry about students getting too personal, the way they might with Facebook.

Fridge is a good answer to some of the privacy problems with social networking, but it's not the only solution. Ultimately, people need to learn how to exercise restraint when posting information to social networks. Even in a network like Fridge that prides itself on privacy, you never know who you can trust. Though all of the information posted to a Fridge group is deleted forever when you delete the group, that doesn't mean that a 'friend' hasn't saved that questionable picture of you for future use.

Social networking etiquette is an important skill. There are plenty of examples of professionals getting in trouble because of Facebook.
