For students looking to further their education, graduate programs can be a great option. Take a look at this article for more information about what degree levels are available, how they are delivered, and any prerequisites to graduate programs.

How Do I Apply to a Graduate School's Admissions Department?

Typically, you'll need to complete an application form providing information about the academic discipline you wish to study and the degree program you're hoping to enter. Most admissions departments also expect you to pay application fees and submit materials that include pertinent transcripts, a statement of purpose and entrance examination scores. You may need to submit your resume and work portfolio. In many instances, you are permitted (if not encouraged) to complete this process online. If electronic transmission isn't possible, you can drop off or mail in materials.

Admissions departments at every school denote specific dates when all application materials must be sent in. After the school receives the application, you can usually check its status within a couple of days. Once you complete the process, the application is often sent to the appropriate department for review. For example, if you are applying for graduate study in psychology, your application is sent to the school's psychology department. Most often, an application is not considered until all components are in.

What Requirements Must I Meet to Enter Graduate School?

Enrollment qualifications vary by school, department and type of degree. However, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in your undergraduate program or most recent academic studies is often mandatory across the board. Typically, mid-range scores or higher on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are standard fare for most admissions departments. You may need to hold a master's degree to get into doctoral degree programs. In certain instances, professional experience could be required.

What Will Happen If I Am Admitted?

If accepted, you are given a specific amount of time to decide to enroll in the school's graduate degree program or decline the invitation. Should you enroll, some schools might offer you the opportunity to pursue financial aid. In some cases, you might be able to apply for a teaching assistantship, fellowship or research project. However, such funding can be limited and may only be offered at the departmental level. Certain universities may also ask you to complete an orientation.

Master's degree programs are commonly available at most 4-year colleges and universities, and can be earned online or in a traditional format.
