What You Need to Know

In Maine, certificate, 2-year degree and 4-year degree programs in graphic design are available, as well as continuing education courses. Programs vary in length and cost, but all include coursework that covers design principles, typography and design software. Admission requirements for certificate and degree programs generally include a high school diploma or the equivalent; prerequisite coursework in algebra may also be required. Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) is located in a small city. The digital design certificate program requires coursework in typography, digital photography and digital page layout. Although EMCC's main campus is located in Bangor, three off-campus centers also house classes.

Maine College of Art

Maine College of Art (MECA) is located in a small city, and with only a few hundred students enrolled (as of 2012), it offers modest class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio. All students are required to take foundational classes in liberal arts subjects and art history. Graphic design students proceed onto coursework that includes typography, letterform and design history.

You'll also learn to work with industry-standard software, including Adobe Creative Suite, and have the opportunity to intern and to gain real-world experience. The campus is home to the Joanne Waxman Library, a visual arts library, as well as the Institute of Contemporary Art, which hosts student exhibits as well as work from contemporary artists worldwide.

Non-degree seeking students can study digital arts through the adult continuing education program at Maine College of Arts. Course offerings include Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, as well as programming language. Some courses take place over the course of a weekend, while others are offered once weekly over a period of time. While attending continuing education courses at MECA, you'll have access to the library and all studios and facilities on campus.
