What is a Bachelor's Degree Program in Healthcare Administration?

Coursework in these programs typically combines general education classes with training in industry-specific business practices. You can expect to learn about finance, medical billing and coding, insurance and healthcare marketing. The following are examples of classes you might find in the curriculum:

Can I Continue My Education?

If you want to continue your education, one option is to pursue a master's degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a graduate-level degree is a common prerequisite for most generalist management positions in the health care field (www.bls.gov). A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree could qualify you for executive or upper-level management positions at healthcare institutions such as hospitals or long-term care facilities. MBA degree programs can usually be completed in 2-3 years, although flexible, accelerated and online formats are available.

You need at least a bachelor's degree to be considered for MBA degree programs with a concentration in healthcare administration. You should also expect to submit Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores. Because courses in these programs commonly include advanced, industry-specific business training, you may benefit from a few years of professional experience in the field.

What Can I Expect From the Job Market?

Additionally, the BLS reported an expected employment growth rate in the profession of 20% between 2016 and 2026.
