What Will I Learn?

Health care administration programs focus on many aspects of business and management while providing information that is specific to the health care industry. Courses may include subjects such as management, statistics, finance, marketing, health economics, information systems, health care policies or law. How Do I Become Certified?

There are no certifications designed solely for hospital managers, but there are a few offered for health care administration in general. The American Hospital Association (AHA) offers a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) designation. In order to receive it, you must have a certain amount of experience in functional and managerial positions, dependent of the highest level of education you have received in the area, and pass a 110-question examination. The certification is good for three years and then must be renewed.

The Professional Association of Health Care Office Management (PAHCOM) also offers a Certified Medical Manager (CMM) certification. This is open only to members of PAHCOM. They require you to have three years experience and have completed 12 credit hours of health care management coursework. The certification is good for two years.
